Hi everybody,

What does mean the "alias" you can find on some civil status (for the family name)?
XXX alias YYY.
Does it mean that this person changed his name?
If so, why does it happened at the begining 19th century?

Thank you for your help!

Marja Helena :P

Thank you DamianP :)
But why this people had another name?
Administration notice that second name, it means it is more than just a kind of nickname; so, does it mean that name of people at that time was not yet fixed, or that they changed their name (after an official process)?

There can be a lot of reasons why they had another name. It's difficult to say why. Once time, I have read about man who had four alias  In official documents you can find alias but there is no explaination why they used it. In next years alias could became an official name.

Regards

Damian

OK... It's very strange. Is it possible That some used indiferently name of their mother and father and That it explains, in some cases, the alias ?

Yes, I think that is very possible.

Yes, it is very possible, but more often this was names of father, or place they came from, or job they do.

Please read this carefully:

You can also google other texts on Polish names written by Fred Hoffmann who is beyond doubt the greatest English speaking expert in this field.
If still in need of more information, buy his book https://www.amazon.com/Polish-Surnames-Origins-Meanings-Revised/dp/0924207078
