That appears to be quite far from the true because the archives of the
Parish church of Riese (now Riese Pio X) hold all the records related to
Giovanni Battista Sarto (birth, wedding and death) and to his family,
including his father Giuseppe Sarto (grandfather of the pope), land owner
and messenger of the Town council, who in 1763, with his parents (Anzolo
and Antonia Liviero), moved there from Castello di Godego and got married
to Paola Giacomello in 1784. The couple had 11 children, six daughters and
five sons, but only six survived.
The fourth one was Giovanni Battista (1792-1852) who, about 41 years old,
got married, on February 13, 1833, to Margherita Sanson (1813-1894) born in
Vedelago, not far from Riese. This couple also had 11 children: the first
one, named Giuseppe after the grandfather, died when was six days old.
Giuseppe Melchiore was the second born.
